The Drum
We did the form. You make the call.
The form guide didn't die.
It moved.
You used to spend Saturday morning with the paper and a pen. The paper stopped printing it. We've been doing it for you ever since.
Three hours you don't have
There was a version of Saturday that worked. The form guide on the kitchen table, a pen, an hour or two before the first. Marking the card. Working out who'd lead, who'd get the run of it, which favourite was too short. Half the pleasure of the bet was the work that went into it.
Then the racing section shrank, went online, and effectively disappeared. What replaced it was an app with a countdown clock, a push notification and a same-race multi — designed for people betting fast, not for people betting well.
Nobody stopped wanting to do the form. They stopped being given it, and they stopped having the morning.
The Drum is that hour, done for you. Sectionals, pace, the map, the class — read properly by people who do this for a living, and written down in plain English before you need it. Not a rating out of a hundred. Not a number you have to decode. An opinion, in sentences, with the case against it included.
Then you make the call. That was always the good part.
This is the whole thing
No dashboard to learn, no ratings to interpret. A selection, what we make of it, what beats it, and the price below which it stops being worth having.
Satin Stiletto
She maps to lead and nothing else in this is looking for the front. The wide gate is the reason she's this price, but over 1200m at Randwick she only needs to cross one of them to get her own way.
The form, done
Sectionals, pace, class and the map — read and interpreted, not dumped on you as a spreadsheet.
In plain English
An opinion in sentences. If you can't read it in ten seconds standing at the bar, we haven't finished it.
What beats it
Every selection carries the case against it. Nobody else publishes the downside, because nobody else is doing analysis.
On the record
Every bet published at the price we published it, settled and recorded. Wins and losses alike.
We take no commission from any bookmaker. Not a cent, not ever.
Most tipping services are paid twice — once by you, and again by a bookmaker on the turnover they send. That arrangement decides which horses get tipped long before the form does. We are paid by our members and by nobody else, which is the only basis on which any of this is worth reading.
